This is a conversation that you should have with your agent.

Some agents approve of their talent self-submitting, while others do not.

If you are self-submitting, ALWAYS include your agent’s name and contact number.

Never try to bypass your agent.

Finding the right coach or studio for your audition taping can make a big difference in how you present yourself to casting. Here are some trusted resources to help you find reputable services in Canada:

.

eBOSS CANADA DIRECTORY
Visit the eBOSS Canada Directory to find a list of audition tape coaches and studios across the country. Many offer in-person and virtual taping services, coaching, and demo reel assistance.

.

VANCOUVER ACTOR’S GUIDE
For performers in British Columbia, the Vancouver Actor’s Guide includes listings for acting coaches and studios that provide self-tape and audition services.

.

ASK YOUR AGENT OR COACH
If you’re represented by an agent, they can often recommend trusted taping services or coaches they regularly work with. Acting instructors may also provide referrals based on your training style and needs.

.

ONLINE ACTING COMMUNITIES
Facebook groups, Discord servers, and Instagram accounts for local actors frequently share reviews and suggestions for self-tape coaches and studios. Try searching for groups like Toronto Actors, Vancouver Casting Notices, or Montreal Acting Community.

.

TIP:
Choose a studio or coach that understands current casting expectations, offers professional-quality lighting and sound, and can give you helpful direction during the session.

Follow the instructions stated in the Casting Call/Audition Notice.

The Casting Director will specify what they require:

Example #1 – The Casting Director is seeking people with a great smile (no acting skills required)
The Casting Call will state: Please submit a recent photo with a smile, your contact number, and your agent’s contact number (if you have an agent).

Example #2 – The Casting Director is seeking actors
The Casting Call will state: Please submit your headshot, résumé, a link to your demo reel (if you have one), your contact number, and your agent’s contact number (if you have an agent).

Example #3 – The Casting Director is seeking people with basketball skills
The Casting Call will state: Please submit a recent photo, a short video showing your basketball skills, state your height, and include your contact number and your agent’s contact number (if you have an agent).

It’s all about following instructions.

During interviews on Entertainment 411, many Casting Directors have stated:
“Your first impression is showing us you can follow the instructions specified within the breakdown.”

No — don’t call the Casting Director.

In the 9-to-5 world, you apply for jobs but don’t receive a response to every submission — you simply keep applying to others.

The same applies in this industry: an audition notice (casting call) is a job posting, and you are submitting for a job opportunity.

If the Casting Director feels you’re right for the role, they will contact you (or your agent).

If you don’t receive a response to a submission, don’t give up — keep searching for other audition notices.
